Verline A. Murphy, Memphis, TN, age 84, of Memphis, peacefully passed into the arms of the Lord on the evening of November 6, 2015. She was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Howard Murphy, and her brothers, Walter and Herschel Abels of Savannah, Tennessee. She is survived by her children, Michael Murphy of Washington, DC, Patrick Murphy (Diane) of Brentwood, Tennessee, Phillip Murphy of Memphis, Tennessee and Mary Ann Boyle (John) of Southaven, Mississippi. She has four grandchildren, John Patrick, Brian, Sean and Nick, and one great-grandchild, Ava. Born in Hardin County, Tennessee, Mrs. Murphy spent most of her youth there. She met her husband, Howard, at Baptist Memorial Hospital on Union Avenue in Memphis where she was a student nurse and he a professional photographer for the hospital. They married in 1953 and moved to Alabama. She earned her nursing degree from the University of Alabama. She began her 40-year nursing career at the VA Hospital in Memphis where she worked with vets who had suffered spinal cord injuries. Her care and concern for vets extended long after retirement as she supported the nonprofit organization Paralyzed Veterans of America with her many gifts and contributions. She eventually returned to Baptist Hospital where she worked for almost 25 years up to the time of her retirement, serving in the hospital's clinic for indigent patients. She was devoted to her family, enchanted by flowers and flower gardens, and cared lovingly for the pet dogs that came into her life. Mrs. Murphy was an avid reader, followed current events on a daily basis and enjoyed talking about local and national politics. She also loved watching sports and was a big fan of University of Memphis basketball. The family would like to thank the caregivers and staffs from Comfort Keepers, St. Francis East Hospital and Crossroads Hospice for the exceptional care they extended to Mrs. Murphy. Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, November 10 at Memphis Funeral Home-Poplar Avenue Chapel, 5599 Poplar Avenue, Memphis. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Wednesday, November 11, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 4851 Park Avenue, Memphis, where she was a parishioner for over 50 years.
