Truman D. Moy, 82, of Cape Neddick Road, York, passed away July 12, 2001, at York Hospital after a long illness.

He was born on April 21, 1919, in Mondovi, Wis., the son of John B. and Mildred (Harvey) Moy.

His family moved to New York state when he was a child. He spent most of his childhood in and around Galway, N.Y., working on farms. He joined the Navy during World War II and became a chief petty officer. He served in Bermuda during the war as an aviation metalsmith where he was assigned to repair sea planes that were on submarine patrol. He was also stationed in the Pacific.

While in the Navy he lived in Florida, Texas, California, and Washington state, as well as serving a tour of duty in Japan. He retired from the Navy in 1961 after serving 20 years, then moved with his wife and three daughters to York Beach, Maine. He worked at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, retiring from there after 21 years.

He was a member of Disabled American Veterans, York Beach Volunteer Firemen, St. Aspinquid Lodge 198, A.F. & A.M., Boardman-Ellis VFW Post 6977, the Fleet Reserve, the Maine Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, and Maine Old Cemetery Association.

With his wife, Ulvilda, they located, mapped, and recorded the majority of the old private cemeteries in the town of York. Their work was then published by The York Historical Resources Task Force as a map titled "Family Burial Plots in York Maine." It was also included in the book "Vital Records of York Maine" by John Frost. He served on the Board of Appeals for York. He enjoyed baseball, reading, history, science, politics, playing cards and his family.

He was predeceased by his wife, Ulvilda (Kurtz) Moy, who died in 1997; a son, Roger J., an infant, who died in 1951; as well as two brothers, Cecil H. Moy, who died in 1981, and Reid J. Moy, who died in 1985.

Survivors include his daughters, Agnes U. Moy and Lona G. Davis, both of York Beach, and Rebecca L. Moy and son-in-law Larry Bailey of York Harbor; two grandsons, Chad E. Davis of York Beach and Dakota D. Irvin of York Harbor; two brothers, Frank E. Moy and his wife, Ann, of Schagicoke, N.Y., and Newell D. Moy and his wife, Lillian, of Salt Lake City, Utah; and 17 nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday, July 19, at the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. A celebration of his life is to follow at the Boardman-Ellis VFW Post #6977.

Donations may be made to the York Beach Fire Department, P.O. Box 70, York Beach, ME 03910.
