At the time of his birth, the area was know as Bruceton Mills, Monongalia, Virginia. Preston County was formed from part of Monongalia in 1818. The area became Bruceton Mills, Preston County, West Virginia in 1863 when the state was recognized and added to the Union.

He married Catherine Sisler on 8 June 1838 in Preston County, West Virginia.
