Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, he was not officially declared by the military as being dead until March 7, 1946.
Husband of Gloria P. Moreland who resided in San Antonio, Texas.
Vernon served as a Second Lieutenant & Navigator on B-24D #42-41087, 319th Bomber Squadron, 90th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.
He resided in Anne Arundel County, Maryland prior to the war.
He enlisted in the Army on July 18, 1941, prior to the war, in Baltimore, Maryland. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a brick and stone mason and also as Single, without dependents.
He was married sometime after his enlistment.
B-24D #42-41087 took off from Nadzab Airfield (#1), Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea on bombing mission over Hollandia, Papua Province, Indonesia. After takeoff this crew was never seen nor heard from again. They crashed possibly due to stormy weather in the area. The entire crew of 10 was lost.
Vernon was declared "Missing In Action" on this mission during the war.
He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
