Born in Bridgeton, Lanarkshire, Scotland to Frances Park and Robert Montgomery. Aitken and his brother David moved to New Orleans in 1848. He married Mary Jane Donahue, a young lady from Boston, in 1853 in Orleans. They moved to San Francisco by 1859. Aitken and Mary Jane had 11 children (possibly 12). Nine (or 10) died as babies or young children and Mary Jane died when their two surviving daughters were 4 and 6.
Aitken married Hannah Marshall between 1875 and 1880.
Aitken's career as an engineer with the San Francisco City Water Works (later Spring Valley Water Works) spanned at least 1859 to 1889.
Their "historic" home on 801 Bay street (corner of Bay and Hyde) was torn down in 1948, where the park now is.
