John Paul Monahan, Jr. a resident of New Canaan, CT passed away at Stamford Hospital on September 25, 2010. Born on November 26, 1922 in Portland Or., he was the son of the late John Paul Sr. and Jennie McDonald Monahan. He was 87.

John attended Wilson Teacher's College in Washington, DC before being inducted into the US Army in 1942, then completed a Bachelor's degree in Political Science from Ohio University in Athens, OH on the GI Bill, then attended The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC for graduate work in Political Science. He was inducted into the US Army and served in the 5th Army, 34th Division, Company K, during World War II from 1942-1945 in North Africa and Italy. He was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart for this service. John began his professional life working for the US Air Force at the Pentagon, then worked in the textile industry for the Henry J. Tully Co. in NYC, and retired as Vice President of Planning and Budget. After retiring from the textile business he finished his teaching degree and taught high school history and economics. Later on in his retirement he worked in the Motion Picture and Recorded Sound Division of the US Library of Congress. He was a member of the Rehoboth Beach, DE chapter of Kiwanis International and also a member of the St. Vincent De Paul Society in Rehoboth. While living in Darien for the past 11 years, he was a member of the Darien Senior Men's Association and St. John Church. He also was a member of Pi Gamma Mu National Social Science Honor Society.

John has six surviving children – Barbara Monahan of Lewes, DE; Clare Myers (Jeff) of Darien, CT; Christopher Monahan (Kathy) of Westport, CT and Walpole, NH; Kathryn Monahan of Levittown, NY; Henry Monahan (Jean) of Santa Fe, NM; and Sally Zogry (Michael) of Lawrence, KS. He is also survived by a brother, Terrance Delano Monahan (Loretta) of Lakewood, CO and two sisters, Patricia Ann Wallace of De Bary, FL and Maureen Monahan Maskrey (Bill) of Thiensville, WI. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Marian Tully Conroy, of Charlotte, NC. He has 15 grandchildren: Rachel & Julia O'Neal; Ellie & Carrie Monahan; Henry, Charlotte, & Virginia Myers; Kayleigh, Owen, & Jeffrey Monahan; Nancy Haas; Henry & Kate Monahan; Sophia & Daniel Zogry and numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol Tully Monahan on 9/11/99, and by a son, John Paul Monahan, III on 1/24/98. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Edward Dean Monahan in 1973.

Calling Hours will be held at the Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Rd., Darien, CT on Thursday September 30, from 5 to 8 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, October 1, 2010 at 10am at St. John Roman Catholic Church, 1986 Post Rd. in Darien, CT. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to the Jay Monahan Center for Gastrointestinal Health, New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, 1315 York Ave., Floor 1, New York, NY 10021.
