David Edmon Mitchell was called home to be with his Father in Heaven on June 22, 2011, after a long and full life here on earth. In honor of his life, his service will be at 10:00 AM, Saturday, June 25, 2011, at the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel with Bro. Ronnie Fox officiating. Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery with his grandsons, Callen Mitchell, Shane Mitchell, Kevin Mitchell, Kyle Mueller, David Mitchell, James Mitchell, and Carl Bayer serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Oswaldo Calderon, Bill Reyes, Steve Smith, Miguel Garza, Rafael Alaniz, Sergio Chavez, and Joe Martinez.
Edmon was born July 8, 1926, in Rockwall, TX, to David Edmon Mitchell and Mapry (Deaton) Mitchell. Later on the family moved to Des Moines, NM. He was united in marriage to Sybil Johnson on November 16, 1944, at Capulin, NM. To this union were born two sons, Ronnie and Mike and one daughter, Shirley.
While living in Des Moines, Edmon worked for the railroad and on the Johnson Ranch for a short while. He also worked as a custodian at the Des Moines school for many years. In 1957, the family moved to Portales, and bought a small farm west of town. They farmed the land, and Edmon also worked at the Portales schools again as a custodian. Edmon's lifelong dream was to have a ranch. In 1959, Edmon bought 30 head of milking cows and began milking. Edmon and Sybil milked the small herd by themselves, and continued to farm. Over the years, Edmon finally got his dream of having a ranch. Edmon and his son, Ronnie, partnered up together, and through the years the herd has grown from the little 30 cows to several thousand head of cattle. During this time, Ronnie's son Callen joined in the partnership and has been working alongside of his dad and granddad. The dairy and ranch has been a family affair, with all the family working together. The ranch is located south of Kenna, NM, and every day, except Sundays, Edmon drove to the ranch to check on the cattle. Sometimes alone and sometimes with his son, grandson, or great-grandsons. Edmon was truly a full fledged Work-a-holic. He loved to work and never was a slacker.
His other passion was missionaries. He gave from his heart to missionaries all over the world. He was always concerned about where other people were going to spend eternity! At the time of his death, he was attending Fellowship Baptist Church. Edmon was saved when he was a just a child, and was baptized in a dirt tank near Capulin, NM. Edmon read his Bible on a daily basis with his wife, Sybil. He was a man of few words, and a very private man, but with a lot of action all his life.
Edmon was preceded in death by his parents, D. E. and Mapry Mitchell and one brother-in-law, David Ratliff.
Edmon is survived by Sybil, his wife of more than 66 years, of their home; his sons and daughters-in-law, Ronnie and Demarys Mitchell and Mike and Yantie Mitchell of Portales; a daughter, Shirley Molinar of Birmingham, AL; one sister, Patty Ratliff of Victoria, TX; two brothers, Marshal (Cotton) Mitchell and wife, Cleo of Amarillo, TX, and Delbert (Red) Mitchell and wife, Yvonne of Logan, NM; four grandsons, Callen Mitchell of Portales, Carl Bayer of San Francisco, CA, James Mitchell and David Mitchell both of Amarillo, TX; six granddaughters, Carla Hardman of Birmingham, AL, Linda Jones and Jewell Price both of Winder, GA, Gail Pilgrim of Fort Polk, LA, Michelle Hromas of Farwell, TX, and Rebekah White of Grady, NM; and 24 great-grandchildren, along with many friends and extended family.
