Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in First United Methodist Church in Shamrock. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Castro County Memorial Gardens in Dimmit with the Rev. John Dorn officiating. Arrangements are by Rix Funeral Directors of Lubbock.
Neva was born May 18, 1919, in Erick, Okla., to John and Wordie Huff Miller. At an early age, they moved to Sanford by a covered wagon. Neva's early grade-schooling was in Canyon, and she graduated from Dimmitt High School. Neva married Alvin Jay Hastings on Aug. 18, 1939, in Dimmitt. Together, they welcomed two children into their lives, Larry and Lois. Alvin died unexpectedly in September 1950.
As a single mother, Neva served two terms as county and district clerk of Castro County. She then moved to Lubbock in 1960 and was employed as a switchboard operator at Texas Tech University. In 1979, she moved to Shamrock and became the curator of the Pioneer West Museum, retiring in 2004. She was a member of Shamrock Hospital Pink Ladies. While in Shamrock, she was an active and faithful member of the Methodist Church. In 2007, she moved back to Lubbock, where, again, she was an active
and faithful member of the Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son, Larry Hastings and wife Janice of Lubbock; a daughter, Lois M. Walton and husband Noel of Shamrock; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials be to Shamrock Meals on Wheels or the
Pioneer West Museum.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, at 1901 Broadway St.
