Ruth Ellen Allen, 96, of Homer, died Feb. 27, 2001 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Mrs. Allen was born Jan. 8, 1905, in Marshfield, Ind., the daughter of Frank and Fern Wurtsbaugh Miller. She married Herman Allen.
Surviving are a son, Robert Allen of Homer; a daughter, Barbara Allen of Quincy; two granddaughters; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, two brothers, a sister and a granddaughter.
Mrs. Allen earned a bachelor’s degree from Indiana State University and a master’s degree from the University of Illinois. She taught at Walnut Grove, Wide Awake, Ray and Randolph schools near Homer. She retired from teaching in 1972, after 43 years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Homer, Order of the Eastern Star, Rebekah Lodge, Retired Teachers Association and Homer Historical Society. Mrs. Allen had been a member of the Homer Library Board. Funeral services were held March 2, at Kirby Funeral Home, Homer. The Rev. Steve Burwell and James Swathwood officiated. Burial was in GAR Cemetery, Homer. Memorial contributions may be made to the Homer Library Board or GAR Cemetery.
