Agnes Miller Elkins

Lake Charles - Agnes Laurine Miller Elkins was born in Lake Charles, La. November 30, 1916 to Max M Miller and Laurine Jorgensen Miller. She passed from this life March 9, 2012 in College Station, Tx.
Agnes was salutatorian of her class at Lake Charles High School, worked as a legal secretary and for Magnolia Petroleum. On Christmas Day, 1941, she married Hoyte Brown Elkins, originally of Woodbury, TN, who was an employee of Louisiana Western Lumber Co. for many years. In 1978 they founded their own business, Elkins Building and Remodeling, which they ran from the Miller home on East Street. They were fortunate to share 62 years of married life, celebrating their 50th anniversary in 1991.
Agnes had a strong love for reading, learning, all things beautiful, classical music, plants, flowers, and all God's creatures. She passed all these beautiful passions on to her daughters, both of whom earned doctoral degrees in music and are university professors, church organists and gardeners.
She had a strong interest in medical advances and enjoyed reading medical textbooks and periodicals. She cheered on children and grandchildren at music, sporting and academic events. She loved to travel and enjoyed family trips to visit her daughters. She enjoyed the surprises to be found along the way almost as well as the destination.
Agnes was baptized and confirmed in St. John Lutheran Church and became a charter member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Lake Charles, serving on the church council. In later years she returned to her home congregation. Her strong Lutheran faith and love for its liturgy and traditions was at the center of her life.
She spent the past two years living with her daughter Laurine in College Station, under Hospice Brazos Valley.
She is survived by two daughters, Laurine Elkins Marlow of College Station, Tx; Eleanor Agnes Elkins of San Angelo, Tx.; grandchildren, Synnove Laurine Marlow of Houston, Tx.; Julian Elkins James of San Angelo, Tx.; son-in-laws William Marlow and Matthew James, niece Petrea Carolyn Piel and many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank the wonderful Hospice Brazos Valley nurses and aides and others who made her last years a pleasant and rewarding time, and the support and prayers of St. Thomas Episcopal Church and Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in College Station.
In Lieu of flowers memorials may be made to The Lutheran Hour, Lutheran World Relief, St. John's Lutheran Church in Lake Charles, Hospice of Lake Charles, Hospice Brazos Valley and National Public Radio.
Her service will be Thursday, March 15, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at St. John Lutheran Church. Pastor Charles Miller will officiate. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. and resume Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until 12 noon at the funeral home and from 1:30 p.m. until service at the church.
