Honored Yellow Pages exec, 'Volunteer of the Year' Burton E. Michaels Jr. of Scotch Plains, formerly of Westfield, died Oct. 5, 2008, in the Center for Hope Hospice, surrounded by his loving wife of 37 years, Nancy (Cavanaugh), and his adoring daughters, Patricia of Scotch Plains and Christine of North Plainfield. Burt fought a very courageous and valiant battle for 22 months against a Glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the First Congregational Church, 125 Elmer St., Westfield. Friends may visit at the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Ave., Westfield, on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. Born July 20, 1940, in Jamaica, N.Y., Mr. Michaels was the son of the late Burton E. Michaels Sr. and Lucy (Whiting). He graduated in 1962 from Syracuse University, where he was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. Mr. Michaels was a senior vice president at Statistical Research Inc., Westfield (now known as Knowledge Networks/SRI) from 1969 to June 2008. He worked in the Yellow Pages industry where he was well respected and known as the 'guru of the Yellow Pages.'' He was awarded the Stuart Stanze Award from the Yellow Pages Association in April 2007; he was the only supplier to ever receive this honor. He was also the 'Volunteer of the Year' in 1990 for the Association of Retarded Citizens for the State of New Jersey. He had been president of the Union County A.R.C., and also held various positions at the state level and organized state conventions. Mr. Michaels was an active coach/ chaperone for Special Olympics New Jersey. He loved being out on the ski slopes with his team from Bergen County; he felt honored to be a part of their lives. He is also survived by his sister, Barbara Michaels of Jamaica, N.Y.; his three daughters from a previous marriage, Kim, Lori and Kelly, and four grandchildren.
