Marvin Meyer died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2012, at St. Catherine's Village in Madison.
Mr. Meyer was born in Chicago on Aug. 16, 1918. He had been a resident of Vicksburg since 1956, relocating to Jackson in 2005. He had been a resident of St. Catherine's Village for several years.
Mr. Meyer received his Bachelor of Science degree in geology from the University of Illinois in 1940 and a Master of Science degree in civil engineering from the University of Chicago after serving honorably in World War II. He retired from the U.S. Corps of Engineers-Waterways Experiment Station as a soil tests engineer and a frequently published researcher.
Mr. Meyer had many hobbies and interests, including being an avid ballroom dancer until the age of 91 teaching dance lessons for Arthur Murray and on cruise ships. He swam three times a week until he was 90 and was a world traveler as evidenced by his wooden figurine collection from five continents. Mr. Meyer was active in the Vicksburg Theatre Guild, playing in the melodrama "Gold in the Hills" for 25 years, as well as many other productions. He was a member of the Anshe Chesed Congregation.
Mr. Meyer is survived by two daughters, Denise Meyer Bromer (Craig) of Charleston, S.C., and Judy Meyer Ford of Boulder, Colo.; grandchildren, Kevin, Elise, Stacy and Michael; great-grandchildren, Morgan, Austin, Matthew and Wesley; and one brother, Eugene Meyer (Evelyn) of Chicago.
He was predeceased by his wives, Harriet K. Meyer (mother of his two daughters); Caroline Leyens Meyer and Mary Belle Cooper Meyer; and his sister, Sylvia Lazar.
Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Anshe Chesed Cemetery with visitation at Riles Funeral Home from 1 p.m. until the service.
