Inez Hamann

Inez Hamann, 88, of Atascadero, died Sunday morning, Aug. 30, 1998 at home.

An informal graveside service will be held in Parkfield at the Imusdale Cemetery on Thursday, Sept. 3 at 6 p.m. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 5 at 10 a.m. at Chapel of the Roses. The Rev. Jim Damewood of the Plymouth Congregational Church in Paso Robles will officiate.

Mrs. Hamann was born in San Miguel on Jan. 6, 1910. Her parents, Fred and Stella Metzler, owned a grocery store there. She attended Parkfield Elementary School and graduated from both King City High Schol and San Jose State Teacher's College. She married the late J.M. Hamann in 1931 and has lived in the Atascadero home they built since 1939.

She served the students of Atascadero Schools for 26 years in various capacities. During World War II she was a substitute teacher and became a home instructor in 1950. She established the Improvement Workshop and taught 2nd and 6th grades at Lewis Avenue School until her retirement in 1976. She was an active leader in education, representing California Teachers Association members on a state level and being instrumental in the training of numerous beginning teachers

Mrs. Hamann was the last surviving charter member of both the Pomona and Atascadero Granges, where she served as pianist and program chairman for many years. She was also a long-standing member of the State Grange, serving as state lecturer.

She enjoyed writing in her early years and had several articles published. In later years she was a regular participant in Templeton Bunko games, Templeton Ladies' Cards and Atascadero Seniors' Cards.

Mrs. Hamann was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, J.M. Hamann. She is survived by daughter and son-in-law Joan and Don Helgren, Atascadero, and a son and daughter-in-law. Duane and Asta Hamann, Parkfield. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Greg Helgren, and is survived by five other grandchildren; Chris, Ken and Julie Helgren, and Kyler and Kris Hamann. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren, Jake, Zack, Alex, Katherine and Clark.

Donations in memory of Mrs. Hamann may be sent to Hospice of San Luis Obispo County, Inc., 1432 Higuera St., San Luis Obispo, 93401, Senior Nutrition Program, 2747 Broad St., San Luis Obispo, 93401, or Escuela del Rio, P.O. Drawer 6007, Atascadero, 93422.
