Ethel G. Drew, 92, of Mountain Road in Denmark, formerly a long time resident of York, died on Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital following a period of failing health.
Born in Merrimac, Mass., she was raised by Richard and Annette (Hall) Merrill and attended local schools, graduating from Merrimack High School.
During a summer vacation to York Beach, she met and would later marry her loving husband of more than 50 years, Gordon J. Drew. Together they made a home in "York Heights" and raised three boys.
She and Gordon were active in their community, volunteering for scouting and taking an active role in their church. She served many years as a Sunday school teacher at First Parish Church and enjoyed her many friends and the youth she worked with.
She and Gordon enjoyed their summer home "Early Sunset" in Denmark on Moose Pond for many years, and after he retired, they converted it to a year round home where she would spend the next 22 years enjoying life on the shore, watching the loons and ensuring her many birds were well-fed year-round.
While in Denmark, she was active in the Senior Citizen program, enjoyed time with her dear friends, Marcia Golembeski, Rita Pickles and Irene Parsons. She also enjoyed knitting, ensuring all of her many grandchildren received handmade Afghans and each grandchild always had warm hands surrounded by a pair of her mittens.
Some of her most cherished times were spent cooking for her family and enjoying time with all of them together for family events. She was so pleased with her most recent gathering for her 90th birthday with all her family and friends there to celebrate.
She will be missed by those who knew and loved her, especially her family, including her sons, Richard F. Drew of Barefoot Bay, Fla., Gerald Drew and his wife, Carol of Kittery and Maynard Drew of Rockwood, Maine; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson, as well as several nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be celebrated in her church, the First Parish Church in York on Monday, May 19 at 10am, with burial to follow in First Parish Cemetery. Friends may visit with Ethel's family on Sunday from 6-8pm at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, ME 03904.
