Peggy Hasstedt passed away in Spokane, WA on January 28, 2016 at the age of 90. She was born in Denver, Colorado in 1925 to Grace and Carl Melzer.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 67 years, John Hasstedt, and her brother Dr. Robert Melzer of Denver, CO. She is survived by her 5 children: Bob Hasstedt; Connie Weiseth (Mark); Jim Hasstedt (Roberta); Dave Hasstedt (Corrinne); Carol Plischke (Randy); and 10 grandchildren: Carl & Paul Weiseth, Bryan, Marc & Erik Hasstedt, Jordin & Lauren Hasstedt, and Chase, Aspen & Mariah Plischke.
When Peggy was a child, she and her mother were the support team for her father and brother, who made history by climbing up and down every Rocky Mountain peak of the Continental Divide from the Wyoming border through Colorado to the border of New Mexico in the summer of 1936. Peggy and Grace met them on each mountain pass that summer with dry clothes and fresh food. She loved their mountain adventures, and lived in Breckenridge and Littleton as well as Denver as she was growing up. Peggy graduated with a B.A. degree in Education and English from the University of Denver in 1947, though she never taught because she was too shy to stand up in front of a class. She was honored as a member of Mortar Board and Phi Beta Kappa. She and John were married in 1947, then moved to Spokane in 1953 after living in Denver, CO; Hartford, Connecticut and Billings, MT. During college, Peggy and John were members of an exhibition square dancing group that performed nationally (Pioneer Promenaders), and they started a square dance group in Spokane after moving here.
Peggy and John joined the Manito United Methodist Church in 1954 and were active members for over 50 years. She was the church secretary for 12 years after her children were in school, and was also active in the Women’s Circle and United Methodist Women. She was often president of her women’s organizations, such as Spokane College Women, PEO and Pi Beta Phi sorority alumnae chapter, and she supported numerous other community service organizations, including delivering Meals on Wheels to seniors for many years.
Reading books was a favorite pastime for Peggy from childhood, she played bridge with her friends, and she took up quilting after her retirement, making hand-sewn quilts for every child and grandchild, as well as numerous others. Peggy walked every year in the Bloomsday 12k run and slalom waterskied through age 83, and loved nothing better than spending time at their second home on Coeur d’Alene Lake, Idaho with children and grandchildren. Everyone will remember Peggy as a sweet, kind, cheerful, intelligent, understated woman who had a sparkling smile and loved nothing better than caring for her family and friends. A nephew just wrote, “Her cup was not just half full, it was 7/8 full.”
Memorial donations may be made to The Rockwood Residents’ Assistance Fund, or The Alzheimer’s Association (ALZ.org).
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, February 6th at the Rockwood Retirement Communities, in the Community Center (2105 S. Forest Estates Dr., Spokane, WA 99223). You are invited to join in this celebration of Peggy’s life.
