The leader of the clain, Samuel Houston Melvin, who brought his family to Oakland, lived just a few doors from Abraham Lincoln in Springfield -- they were great friends. Samuel was one of those who returned Lincoln's body from Washington, and was on the committee to plan and building the memorial that was done in Springfield. When the LIncolns moved to Washington, they sold most of their furnishings; the Melvins bought several pieces -- eventually went to the Oakland Museum.
