She was a daughter of Joseph and Catherine (Longstreet) Megill and granddaughter of David and Catherine (Cosgrove) Megill. She was widowed when she was pregnant with her son Peter Charles Brown who was born 5 Aug. 1864, her 12th child. Her husband, Peter Brown died from injuries suffered while fighting in the Battle of Cold Harbor. He had been shot in the arm and captured by the Confederates. His arm was amputated but infection set in and he did not survive the surgery.He had been taken to a military hospital in Richmond, VA.
