Shirley Verna Meese was born in Wahpeton, North Dakota on March 22, 1924 to William E. and Verna Pearson Rezac. Shortly after her birth, the family moved to Mead, NE. She lived and attended school in Mead until her family moved to Wahoo in 1938. Shirley met her future husband, Carl Meese, while attending Wahoo High School. Shirley was selected to attend Girlsí State in 1940 where she was elected Attorney General. While in high school, Shirley was active in musical activities, band and choir. She whistled in music contests, winning first prize, and whistled on KORN, Fremontís radio station. Growing up in the ìBig Band eraî inspired Shirley to start her own all-girl orchestra, which played at theatres in the area. After graduation from Wahoo High, she attended Luther College and worked at the Wahoo Gas Company.
Shirley and Carl were married on January 2, 1944, shortly after Carlís return from helping to rebuild military bases in Hawaii. They settled in Wahoo where they lived and raised their four children until 1968 when they moved to Omaha. Shirley and Carl moved to Spirit Lake, IA in 1971 where Shirley remained until 1989, the year after Carlís death, when she moved back to Wahoo to be close to her parents.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Carl, and her parents.
Shirley is survived by daughters and sons-in-laws, Laurie and Ken Sieg, Lincoln, Kathy and Mike Stolarcyk, Whitney Point, NY; sons and daughter-in-law John Meese, Brecksville, OH and Jim and Vickie Meese, Exira, IA; grandchildren and spouses, J.D. and Jolene Sieg, Omaha, Michelle Weaver, Denver, NC, Wendy and Chris Stocum, Raleigh, NC, Michael Stolarcyk, Whitney Point, NY, John Meese Jr. and Jeff Meese, Lincoln, Hayley and Mike Humphal, Sioux Falls, SD, and Bethany Meese, Estherville, IA; great-grandchildren: Brandon and Taylor Sieg, Omaha and Raymond and Nathan Stocum, Raleigh; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Ralph and Bernice Meese, Wahoo and many loving relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM Saturday July 26 at the First Congregational Church in Wahoo with the Reverend Todd Storm Officiating. Casket bearers will be J.D. Sieg, Michelle Weaver, Wendy Stocum, Michael Stolarcyk III, John Meese Jr., Jeff Meese, Hayley Humphal, and Bethany Meese. Burial will be at Sunrise Cemetery, Wahoo. Visitation is scheduled for Friday 2-8 PM at the funeral home with the family present 5-8 p.m. Memorials may be made to the First Congregational Church.
