CAPT. CHARLES H. MEEKIN. His Death this Morning from Acute Pneumonia. Brief Sketch of His Life as a Steamboatman. Died at his residence in this city, corner of West Market and Lafayette streets, at 7:30 o'clock this (Friday) morning, Capt. Chas. H. Meekin, in the 76th year of his age. Capt. Meekin was born at Allegheny City, Penn., July 12, 1808. At the age of 19 he commenced his steamboat career as an engineer, running on boats in the Pittsburg trade till 1832, when he made his home at New Albany, where he has since resided with the exception of three years, spent upon his farm three miles west of the city on the river. In 1834 he was united in marriage to Rebecca Young Himes, daughter of the late Capt. Himes, who survives him. . . A loving, devoted wife survives deceased who has the tenderest sympathies of her wide circle of friends in her bereavement. He also leaves five children: Mr. James H. Meekin, deputy Township Trustee; Mrs. James F. Lindley, of Evansville; Mrs. R. M. Boardman, Mrs. John Brown, and Miss Laura Meekin, of this city; and two adopted children of his daughter, the late Mrs. S. S. Harper. New Albany Ledger 28 Mar 1884
