Proud WWII Army Veteran
Richard Leroy Meck, Sr., 91, of Mechanicsburg, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, May 21, 2011, at Carlisle Regional Medical Center. He was born on Tuesday, September 16, 1919, the son of the late Walter L. and Thelma (Barnhart) Meck. He was the widower of Helen I. Meck, who died on October 28, 1998 and who he married December 23, 1939.
Leroy was a very proud Army Veteran of WWII, enlisting in May 11, 1944, serving in the 10th Mountain Division, 85th Regiment, L Company in Italy. He was a lifetime member of the VFW. He retired as a manager from General Tire, where he worked for many years.
Leroy was a 70+ year member of Shiremanstown United Methodist Church, where he served as an usher and as Secretary/Treasurer, of the Men's Bible Class and the Sunshine Class. His faith was key in his life and he lived according to his beliefs. He was a giving man who donated to many charities. "What little he had, he shared."
Leroy was completely devoted to his family who he enjoyed more than anything in life. He loved hunting, fishing, spending time at his river lots in Goldsboro and Newport and camping with his family and friends. In fact, he was still towing a camping trailer at 88 years young. He enjoyed bus trips and very especially, dancing with Gertrude. He will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved him.
Leroy is survived by three sons: Donald L. Meck Sr., and his wife Joy A. (deceased) of Mechanicsburg; Richard L. Meck Jr., and his wife Nancy of Dillsburg; Barry A. Meck and his wife Judy of Mechanicsburg; his long-time best friend: Gertrude Utley of Shiremanstown; two brothers: Miles "Jake" Meck of Enola, Robert "Bob" Meck of Mechanicsburg; seven grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; one great great granddaughter and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers: Thelma, Walter and Russell.
All are welcome to join Leroy's family at his viewing on Wednesday, May 25, 2001, from 9:00 a.m., until time of service at 10:30 a.m., at Shiremanstown United Methodist Church, 125 East Main Street, Shiremanstown, PA, 17011, with the Pastor John A. Ile and Pastor John L. Kurtz, officiating. Burial will immediately follow in Shoop's Garden of Rest Cemetery, Shiremanstown, where military honors will be presented by the Cumberland County Honor Guard.
The family suggests memorial contributions to: Shiremanstown United Methodist Church Shoop's Cemetery Fund, which was of particular importance to Leroy, or to the charity of your choosing.
