Velva Winifred Hughes 81, of Coverstone Lane in Shenandoah, went home to be with the Lord on Friday evening October 17, 2008.
She was born in Page County on June 18, 1927,and was the daughter of the late Alfred Thomas and Crimora Meadows.
Mrs. Hughes attended Rockingham County Schools and lived her entire life in the Page County area.She was a homemaker and a member of the Shenandoah Baptist Church, where she was involved in many church activities.
On October 15, 1947, she married Vernon L. Hughes who preceded her in death on December 26, 2000.
She is survived by three daughters,Linda Sue Hamilton and Bonnie Lou Hilliards both of Shenandoah,Lori Ann Berrier and husband Kenneth Berrier of Mt.Airy, NC,three grandchildren,Donnie Leon Hughes and wife Patrice Hughes,George Vernon Hamilton and wife Heather Hamilton,and Wendy Sue Williams and husband B.J. Williams,five great-grandchildren,Tylor,Trevor and Telsie Williams and Cherish and Jacob Hamilton,one sister Iva Shifflett of Shenandoah,and brother Frank Meadows of Elkton.She was also survived by a special pet "gizzy" Gizmo.
In addition to her husband,she was preceded in death by a son, Donnie Leon Hughes.
Also preceded her in death three Brothers;Robert Meadows,Kenneth Meadows,and Delbert Meadows,and four sisters;Rosie Merica,Anna Dean,Ruth Croft,and Jean Snow.
The family received friends 7-9:00PM Monday,October 20,at the Shenandoah Baptist Church.
A Funeral Service was held Tuesday October 21,at the Shenandoah Baptist Church with Rev. Hudson Nuckols and Glendon Hensley.
Musical Selections By Mrs. Peggy Nuckols.
PallBearers were ;Charles Williams,Cory Hammer,Larry Dean,Ricky Merica,Chris Meadows,and David Meadows.
Burial was in Coverstone Cemetery.
