Please join our family in celebrating the life of our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Edna Earle McBryde Cathey, of Florence, on Friday morning, Feb. 23, 2007, at 10 a.m. in McDowell Hall at First United Methodist Church, Florence. Brother Donnie McDaniel and the Rev. Gary Formby will be officiating. Music will be provided by Rick Lester and Linda May. Burial will follow the service at Greenview Memorial Park. The family received friends Thursday evening, Feb. 22, 2007, from 6-8 p.m. at Elkins Funeral Home.
Edna Earle McBryde Cathey went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2007.
Mrs. Edna Earle Cathey was born in Hale County, Ala., on Dec. 11, 1910, the daughter of the late Annie Lee McBryde Douglas and Earl McBryde. Her only sister, Bernice Kaufmann, preceded her in death.
While a student at Montevallo College, Edna Earle attended a social event at Marion Military Institute where she met a young cadet from Florence, Lee Cathey. Later, they both were enrolled at Florence State Teachers College and soon renewed their friendship.
After graduation, she taught several years before her marriage to Lee Cathey on Aug. 18, 1933, which lasted 55 years until his death in 1988.
During her residence in Florence for more than 70 years, Mrs. Cathey has been a faithful member of First United Methodist Church. She attended the Mary Bender Sunday School Class regularly as well as serving as treasurer of Circle 6 for more than 40 years.
Mrs. Cathey was active in many community activities, including the Pierion Study Club, Vivian Davis Home Bible Study, UMW Circle No. 6, as well as events related to Mr. Cathey's work and benevolent interests.
Throughout her life, Mrs. Cathey was devoted to her family and supported each one in their various pursuits. She excelled in many hobbies of homemaking and enjoyed reading until 2007.
Mrs. Cathey is survived by her twin daughters, Rose Marie and husband, David McFall, of Florence, and Mary Lee and husband, Jerry Wright, of Tyrone, Pa.; grandchildren, Stephen and Carolyn McFall, of Knoxville, Tenn., Beth and Ferrin Bayles, of Florence; great-grandchildren, Jim Sheffield, David McFall, Neil McFall, Amy Bayles, Sidney Bayles and Sara Bayles.
Mrs. Cathey also enjoyed the companionship and loving care of Lena, Marilyn and Mary for the last two years.
Pallbearers will be Bill Wallace, Bill Cadenhead, John Archer, Bob Bohnstedt, Stephen McFall, Jim Sheffield, Larry Anthony and Adam Richardson.
Honorary bearers will be Kermit Breed, Bob Cox, Jimmy Johnson, Murrell Johns, Henry Prater, Jim Prater, Grady House and Jim Spain.
Her family wishes to extend special thanks to Hospice of the Shoals for their superior care and abundant love, which exceeded all expectations and also to Dr. Mitchell and Pam Hill for excellent medical care.
