He was the husband of Evaline "Evie" (Zaher) McPhillips of 53 years.
He was born in Lowell on Aug. 17, 1925, the son of the late James and Annie (Robinson) McPhillips.
He graduated from St. Patrick's School in Lowell and during his life was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church in Lowell and St. Mary's Church in Chelmsford.
Mr. McPhillips worked at General Electric Corporation in Lowell for 41 years, retiring in May 1989. During his 41 years at GE, he held various positions including foreman, expediter, and eventually shipping manager at the time of his retirement. He was a member of the GE Quarter Century Club.
He was also an avid bowler and was a member of the GE bowling league and other various bowling leagues over the years. He also coached Chelmsford Little League baseball teams for many years.
Mr. McPhillips also enjoyed gardening and always planted a large vegetable garden in his backyard every year.
He was an active member of the Chelmsford Senior Center and during his retirement, enjoyed taking numerous Senior Center-sponsored trips with his wife.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Cheryl (McPhillips) Saunders of Shrewsbury; a son, Joseph McPhillips Jr. of Dracut; three grandchildren, Bradley and Kyle Saunders of Shrewsbury and Matthew McPhillips of Dracut; a sister, Madeline (McPhillips) Zaher of Chelmsford.
He was also the brother of the late Helen Gormley and James and Francis McPhillips.
