ABINGDON - John R. McNeely, 70, Abingdon, died at 2:50 p.m. Sunday, March 18, 2012, at home.
He was born Aug. 11, 1941, in Louisville, Ill., the son of Robert Preston and Leone (Rinehart) McNeely Jr. He married Sherry McElrea in 1960 in Abingdon. He later married Peggy Ferguson on Sept. 2, 1977, in Abingdon.
John is survived by his loving wife, Peggy; one son, Rod (and Dani) McNeely of Galesburg; one daughter, Renea Parrick of Oquawka; nine grandchildren; three brothers, Rich McNeely and Gerald L. McNeely, both of Effingham, and James (and Joann) McElrea of Lake Bracken; and one sister, Linda (and Dave) Thompson of Flora.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant daughter, Lisa.
He graduated from Louisville High School in 1959. He had lived in Abingdon since 1960. He worked at Gates Rubber Company for 36 years, retiring in 2002. He was a member of Louisville Christian Church. His hobbies included riding his Harley motorcycle, playing golf and selling cars at Scott's Auto Sales and Repairs in Abingdon.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 23, 2012, at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel. Mrs. Eleanor Landon will officiate. Burial will follow in Abingdon Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the chapel.
