Death: Jan. 12, 2011

Margaret Patricia McNair Allen was born July 25, 1923 to the late Artemas McNair and Bessie Cain McNair in Robeson County, NC. Margaret loved the Lord and on January 12, 2011, she entered her heavenly home into the welcoming arms of God.

Margaret's early education began in Robeson County Public School, she attended Kate Bitting School of Nursing in Winston-Salem, NC. Her nursing studies were never completed as she met and married the love of her life, George William Allen. From this union five children were born. Margaret was a devoted wife and homemaker who loved her children. The home was always open to everyone and there was always an extra chair at the table for home baked bread, or a complete meal, including desert apple pie, or pound cake.

In 1957, after having completed Russell Business School, Margaret took a temporary position as a clerk typist at the East Winston Branch Library, later she was promoted to Library Assistant I. This position led to a thirty year career with the Forsyth County Library System. She loved her work and touched the lives of all she met. There were many evenings that the station wagon was filled with library youth patrons being dropped off at home. She was the driving force behind the Tutorial Program that was established to help the youth and elderly, improve reading skills and prepare for the completion of GED. Margaret, along with Pat and John Stepney, Rachel and Dwayne Jackson, started the month long celebration of Kwanza Holiday at the East Winston Branch Library. Her love and dedication to her work were keys to maintaining the operation of the library when it was threatened to be shut down.

Her walk with her God began at an early age in the Beauty Spot Methodist Church, Rowland, NC. Her membership was transferred to the Saint Paul United Methodist Church, Winston-Salem, North Carolina with her marriage. When the children were young, she sent them to Sunday School, and then joined them and their father for morning worship service. Over the years she was a faithful and active member of the United Methodist Women, The Communion Board, Carrie Mayfield Bible Study Group, and Sunday School.

After retirement, she enjoyed traveling, sewing and knitting her Idiot Cloth (The dish cloth she called her "sanity") that she generously shared with friends and family. For the past 4 years she has been splitting her time between the Baltimore daughters and sharing her smile and wit with newly established friends in her two new homes.

She was preceded in death by her husband, and oldest daughter Artie C. Allen. Left to cherish her memories are her daughters Jeane A. Morehead and Patricia A Diggs of Baltimore, MD, Myra A Shore and Mabel A Perry of Winston-Salem, NC, ten grandchildren and twenty seven great-grand children , her oldest sister, Sallie M Parnell of Scarsdale, NY, a devoted nephew Julius McNair who was like her son, and a host of nieces, nephews , other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted 12 Noon Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011 at St. Paul United Methodist Church. Rev. Donald Jenkins will officiate and interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11am-12 noon Saturday at the church.

In lieu of flowers the family request donations to be sent to: Seasons Hospice Attention: Dr. Gary Applebaum, Director 6934 Aviation Blvd. Suites N-R Glen Burnie, MD 21061

Just reading your "biography" makes me feel that the people whose lives you touched in you life can't help to be richer just from knowing you.
