According to Dean's online obituary, he attended Belleville Township High School. He then went to and graduated from the University of Illinois at Champaign with a Bachelor of Science in Banking and Finance. While at UI, Dean was a member of Delta Upsilon fraternity.
On 15 Feb 1941, Dean married Edna Grace Farthing.
During World War, II, Dean served with the United States Air Force in the Sudan.
After the war, Dean and Edna had three daughters: Nancy Catherine, Margo Harriet, and Deanna.
Dean's obituary provides details of his career. He was the retired president of L.R. McKinley & Sons Chevrolet (a family business). Dean was also president of the Belleville Auto Investment Company, the Belleville Auto Dealers Association, and the Illinois State Auto Dealers Association.
Dean's civic activities include his lifelong membership in the United Methodist Church, where he served as Chairman of the Board and the Building Committee for 20 years. Dean was the chairman of the official board in 1950 when the Jackson Street Methodist Church and the First Methodist Church of Belleville joined to form the Union United Methodist Church. The present church building was designed, financed, and constructed under his leadership.

--served on the board of directors of the Belleville Savings Bank, the Belleville National Bank, and Green Mount Cemetery
--was co-founder and past president of the St. Clair County Taostmasters Club, a past president of the Belleville Rotary Club and the Belleville Red Cross Chapter
--received the Young Business of the Year award from the Belleville Chamber of Commerce
Dean was an avid golfer and a member of the St. Clair Country Club and the Delray Beach Club.
Dean's first wife--Edna Grace--preceded Dean in death (15 Apr 1977). They had been married for 36 years.
He then married Rita Marie Jung who also preceded him in death, dying 11 Mar 2008. Dean and Rita were married for 30 years.
The obituary lists the following survivors: three daughters, Nancy Sandoval, Margo (Hal) Measley and Deanna (John) Graham; brothers, William Wayne (Gloria) McKinley and Leland "Bill" (Helen) McKinley; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the Union United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Ed Weston officiating. The family received friends in the McKinley Hall following the service.
