Mary Ophelia Blouin, nee McKernan, was born 7 Feb 1873 in Ste-Anne de la Pocatière, Quebec, where her Irish father was a professor of English, later music. She later grew up in Lévis where her father moved to teach at the college there and was a popular band leader. Mary moved to Québec city with her mother after her father died. There she became a nurse, met Arthur, married him when her mother died. They moved to Tadoussac, and from there Arthur applied to the NWMP to become a surgeon in May 1898. He was assigned to Battleford and left the first week of June, stopping in Ottawa to meet NWMP officials and his sponsor Wilfrid Laurier.
