Helen Isabelle McKenzie Imig, 94, a resident of The Dalles, died at a local hospital on Tuesday, March 17, 2009.
She was born in Independence, Iowa, on Feb. 13, 1915, the sixth of nine children to Everett Charles and Mary Isabelle (Phelps) McKenzie.
She lived in Central Wisconsin from her early years until graduating from high school. She attended La Salle Business College in La Salle, Ill., following graduation from high school in Neillsville, Wis., in 1933.
She married Harold William Imig in East Moline, Ill., on June 29, 1940. She was a homemaker raising seven children and worked for many years at The Dalles Cherry Growers. She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, active in St. Rose's Circle altar society until health prevented participation, also a member of Catholic Associates, Mill Creek Grange and the Teamsters Union.
Gardening was the joy of her life. She loved flowers anywhere and everywhere. Discussing current events and politics was an avocation which kept her mind keen and active.
She is survived by her daughters, Peggy Imig and Jeanne Garrett and her husband Steve, all of The Dalles; and Mary Kay Saty and her husband Jeff, Canby; her sons, James Imig, The Dalles; William Imig and his wife Raina, Portland; Joseph Imig and his wife Elizabeth, Chelan, Wash.; and Thomas Imig and his wife Kathy, Wenatchee, Wash.; her grandchildren, Glory, Katie, David, Brian, Chandra, Brandi, Melody, Arya, Wendy, Jonathan, Derek, Veda, Isaac, Tyler, Lindy and Benjamin; her great-grandchildren, Annelise, Evan, and Adeline.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Imig, her parents and her eight siblings.
Viewing and visitation will be held on Friday, March 20, from noon to 6:30 p.m. and on Saturday, March 21, from 9 to 11 a.m. at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home.
Recitation of Rosary will be held on Saturday, March 21, at noon at St. Peter's Catholic Church with the funeral service at 1 p.m. and burial to follow at St. Peter Catholic Cemetery with Fr. Todd Unger officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Academy in The Dalles.
