William McKennan entered the Continental Army in June 1776 as a 2nd Lieutenant. He served until October 1783 when he was mustered out as Captain. He then became Colonel of Militia. In 1803 he was appointed Prothonotary and Clerk of Courts of Washington County by Governor McKean.
