Mary Elizabeth McKean Adams was the daughter of Robert and Mary Dewitt McKean. She married William John Adams in 1866 at the age of 19.
It has often been repeated that Mary was Native American, or had Indian blood. According to her brother James's Death Certificate, both of her parents were born in Ireland, so this is unlikely.
William and Mary had 10 children; Melissa Jane Adams Glasser, Nancy Elizabeth Adams Calhoon, Charles Harvey Adams, Sarah Augusta Adams Mellen, Amanda Adams Barr, James Adams, Harry Thompson Adams, Mary Adda Adams Klink, William Floyd Adams, and Ambrose Updegraff Adams.
When Mary died at the young age of 51, she still had 4 children under 21 years of age and had already lost one child, James.
It is no wonder that the inscription on her headstone reads, "I am weary, let me rest."
