MUNCIE--Rita Jane (McGuire) Becker, 88, well known Muncie attorney, died late Tuesday evening, January 26, 2010 at home.
Rita was born in Gilette, Arkansas August 4, 1921 to Milton R. and Charline (Hinkle) McGuire. She came as a child to Muncie. She had two brothers, John Robert (Mick) McGuire and Richard Joseph (Dick) McGuire, both deceased.
Rita graduated from Muncie Central High School in 1939. She attended Ball State Teachers College for pre-law classes. She then attended Indiana University in Bloomington and received her law degree from Indiana University in Indianapolis in June of 1948. While in Law school, Rita served as a law clerk for the Honorable Judge Paul Dowell until his death. She was also secretary to the Indiana Supreme Court at the Statehouse and Assistant Secretary to the Board of Law Examiners. Upon graduation from law school, Rita joined her Mother, Charline, in private practice as McGuire & McGuire, Attorney at Law. Charlene and Rita were the first mother daughter attorneys to be admitted to the United States Supreme Court in May of 1951. Rita continued going to the office on Tuesdays and Thursdays through December 2009 when her health became such that she was unable to do so.
Mrs. Becker was a lifelong member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church. She was a member of the Daughters of Isabella, the Indiana State Bar Association, the Delaware County Bar Association, Women of the Moose, Chapter 712, Business and Professional Women's Association, Delaware Country Club, the former Green Hills Country Club (where she met her future husband) and she served on the board of the Salvation Army.
Surviving is her husband, Meyer S. Becker, currently residing at Morrison Woods in Muncie. Rita and Meyer celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary earlier this month on January 3rd. She is also survived by her niece with whom she was living for the last few years, Kathleen Naze (husband-Dick); her nephew, Richard J. McGuire II (wife-Dawn) of Noblesville, IN; her great nephews, Timothy Schwer Jr. and Zachary Naze of Indianapolis, IN; and her great nieces, Jessica (McGuire) Dolzall of Camby, IN and Portia Naze of Frankfort, IN. Rita's extended family includes Meyer's sister Jennie Samberg; his nieces and nephews and their families; and her many cousins, too numerous to name as well as their families. All were very special to "Aunt Rita."
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 30, 2010 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church with Father Dennis Goth officiating. Private burial will be in Elm Ridge Cemetery. Friends may call at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel, from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Saturday, January 30, 2010.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Capital Campaign Fund, 820 E. Charles Street, Muncie, IN 47305; Ball Memorial Hospice, 2401 W. University Avenue, Muncie, IN 47303 or A.R.F. 1209 W. Riggin Road, Muncie, IN 47303 in honor of her protectors Gus and Noel.
