McGucker (also sometimes spelled McCucker) enlisted into the US Army on August 5, 1850 (age 14/15) at Jefferson Barracks, MO. He was described as 5-0, hazel eyes, black hair with a dark complexion. His listed civilian occupation was drummer. On his enlistment form, McGucker listed his age as 18.

McGucker became a career soldier. He served in Indian Territory,Utah, Kansas, Maryland & with the cavalry detachment at the United States Military Academy (West Point). McGucker was described on one of his later enlistment forms as 5-5, hazel eyes, dark hair & ruddy complexion. His duties were bugler.

On May 14, 1875, McGucker was assigned to Company I, 7th US Cavalry at Ft Randall, Dakota Territory. Company I was commanded by Capt Myles Keogh.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Company I was assigned to LTC Custer's battalion. Mc Gucker was killed during the battle.

After the battle most of Company I was found in area between Calhoun Ridge & Last Stand Hill. Mc Gucker's body was not reported as being identified.

It is likely Mc Gucker's unidentified remains were buried where that had been found. In 1881, all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on top of Last Stand Hill.
