Jerry was a teacher with the Walker County School System for 33 yrs., serving as sponsor for many clubs and high school events along with his teaching duties. He also served on state level committees for curriculum development and was a State Finalist for Georgia Teacher of the Year in 1986. The majority of his career was teaching high school, with a focus on and passion for Social Studies and Government classes.
In 1974, Jerry was ordained as a Deacon at the First Baptist Church in LaFayette, GA. Upon coming to Lakeland, he served First Baptist Church at the Mall as a member of the Global Reach Board, as a Senior Adult Sunday School Director for 16 yrs., several executive committees and as a Deacon for 20 yrs. During his tenure as a Deacon, he is credited with starting the Widow and Widower Ministry and for several years was the 2nd Vice Chairman. Jerry has also served on the South Florida Baptist Association Missions committee and as Chairman of the Stewardship committee. In 2010, he was awarded Deacon Emeritus at the First Baptist Church at the Mall.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Alonzo and Walter McGhee, and sisters Inez Moser and Rosa Lee Stamey.
Surviving is his wife Betty Sue, daughter LaWanda Sue and her husband Harold Maready, granddaughter Erin Ashley Maready, his sister Elaine McCulloh and brother Eugene McGhee.
