Mrs. Andrew Whannel, a victim of cancer, died at her home near Traer Monday night. Several years ago, an operation held the disease in check and until a few months ago, she enjoyed fairly good health. Of late she failed rapidly. Mrs. Whannel was a daughter of Gilbert McDowell, one of our pioneer families and one of the most substantial and well known in the community. She was born here August 5, 1869. She was educated in the schools of Traer, and in Coe college. Finishing her education, she taught school here until her marriage to Andrew Whannel, February 10, 1904. Three children have been born to the couple. Two sons died when young. One daughter, age twelve, survives, with the husband and aged father. Mrs. Whannel has always been very active and useful in church work. She became a member of Tranquillity church in 1883, and from that day has been a real worker, and has also been prominent in the social life of that community. Tranquillity has lost a beloved wife, neighbor and friend. Her death comes with crushing force upon her aged father, who was made welcome in her home after the death of his daughter Eliza, a few months ago. The funeral was on Wednesday afternoon. Rev. Wray conducted the service at Tranquillity church. The body rests in Buckingham cemetery.
