Reverend Richard T. McCue, of Exeter
McCUE, Reverend Richard T. – Of Exeter, NH, formerly of Somerville and Arlington passed away suddenly on August 28, 2013.
He was the beloved son of the late Mary (O'Malley) and Daniel McCue. Loving brother of Jeanette Puorro of CA, Joseph McCue of NH, Eugene McCue of Chicopee and the late Daniel and Arthur McCue and Mary McQuilken. Also survived by many dear nieces and nephews.
Reverend McCue attended Boston College and St. Johns Seminary and received his Masters Degree at Princeton Theological Seminary.
He was ordained in Boston in 1958 and began his service with the Home Missions in Charlotte, NC until 1972.
After his service in Charlotte and inspired by his military service as a US Marine veteran of the Korean War, he became a Navy Chaplain for many years, including a tour of duty as a Marine Chaplain on the front lines of active combat in Vietnam. He later returned to the US and spent six years at sea duty on three air craft carriers and as chaplain of the US Naval Academy. During his distinguished military career Reverend McCue received many awards and citations including Navy Commendation Medal "V", Gold Star in lieu of second award, Combat Action Ribbon, 2 Presidential Unit Citations, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal (3 Battle Stars), United Nations Medal, Vietnam Service Medal (2 Battle Stars), Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Navy Expeditionary Medal, Meritorious Unit Citation Republic of Vietnam and the Sea Service Medal.
In 1987 he retired his 25 year Navy Career as a Captain and was assigned to Our Lady Help of Christians Parish in Newton for a short time before returning to the Diocese of Charlotte, NC where he served as Pastor of several churches, including St. Francis of Assisi in Franklin and Our Lady of the Mountains Mission in Highlands until his retirement from active ministry in 1998.
During his retirement Father Dick assisted in many parishes in the New Hampshire Seacoast area. For the past few years he spent the winter months in Tempe,AZ where he assisted at The Church of the Holy Spirit.
Funeral procession will begin from the George L. Doherty Funeral Home 855 Broadway (Powder House Sq.) Somerville Friday morning at 10:00 am followed by a concelebrated Funeral Mass in St Clement Church, Somerville at 11:00 am. Relatives and friends are invited to attend Calling Hours Thursday 3-7pm. Interment Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Arlington. Donations may be made in memory of Fr. Dick McCue to St. Clement Parish 71 Warner St. Medford, MA 02155.
