Mrs. Adams was born at "Walnut Grove," the old McCormick Homestead in Rockbridge county, Virginia, September 17, 1822. Early in life she made a public profession of her faith in Christ, and joined the Presbyterian church near her father's home. She was married to Hugh Adams on the 8th day of May 1845, and they settled at Kerr's Creek, a small town in the same county, where six children were born unto them, viz: Mary, Robert, Cyrus, James, Ella and Leander. In 1857 the family removed to Chicago, where, associated with the late Hon. Cyrus H McCormick, her husband became the active partner in the well known grain firm of McCormick, Adams & Co. 4 Nov 1891 issue of the Staunton Spectator.
Amanda's father, Robert McCormick's Walnut Grove farm is located near Raphine, Rockbridge Co., VA. 8 of the 9 buildings remain today (A History of Rockbridge Co., by Oren F Morton, the WPA survey, multiple online sites, even wikipedia has data on the farm.)
Her husband's obit was in the 23 Mar 1880 issue of the Staunton Spectator (see 5-2017 added photo on his site).
Amanda's brother Leander James McCormick, wrote a McCormick biography called Family Record and Biography in 1896. It includes photos of both Amanda and husband Hugh Adams inside, plus her bio.
