Mary Ellen Matthews 95, of Marietta passed away Wednesday, August 14, 2013 at Harmar Place in Marietta. She was born Thursday, May 30, 1918 in Marietta, OH to the late Edward and Mabel (Fitzgerald) McCormick.
Mary Ellen was a lifetime member of the First Congregational Church in Marietta and worked as an assistant to Dr. Kenneth Bennett until her retirement.
Mary is survived by three nieces, Barbara Anne Bruner (John Nield) of Cincinnati, OH, Nancy Alicia Emmert (Robert) of Midland, MI, Maura Ellen Seger (Michael) of Stanford, CT; three stepchildren, Cheryl DeMara (Frank) of Oswego, NY, Charlene Waldo (Rick) of Columbus, OH, William Matthews (Diane) of Tulsa, OK, as well as many grandnieces and grandnephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Francis "Rango" Matthews whom she had married on March 8, 1980 in Marietta, OH; brother, Tryon McCormick; sisters Jeannette (Bernard) Joy and Anne (Michael) Jones.
Services will be held at 11 AM on Monday, August 19, 2013 at the First Congregational Church, 318 Front St, Marietta, OH 45750 with Reverend Linda Steelman officiating. Burial will follow in Valley Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 AM until the time of service at the church.
In keeping with family tradition (Flowers for the living), the family requests, in lieu of flowers, for Mary Ellen to be remembered in your thoughts and prayers, and that some time you give a flower to someone to brighten their day, as many had done so for her.
