|Birth: ||Jan., 1835|
South Carolina, USA
William Henry McClelland (McClendon/McLendon/McClindon/McLindon/McLenon/McLeod, etc.) was born in January of 1835 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. He was a farmer and Confederate veteran. The son of Taltern McLindon and Avery Whittle McLindon, he had four siblings. He came from Edgefield County, South Carolina to Bulloch County, Georgia where he married Mahitable ("Hattie") Cone McClelland, and they had eight children: William Madison McClelland, Sula Frances McClelland Glisson, Mary J. McClelland, Alice E. McClelland, Narsissie A. McClelland, Palmer Pauline McClelland Chaplin, and two infants. In the 1900 census grandson John Melton (born October 1896) is shown living with William and Hattie. Through which of their children was he their grandson?
William enlisted in Company B (the Banks Partisan Rangers) of the Georgia Cavalry, 21st Battalion, who guarded the South Carolina coast from attacks and landings, but most of William's Confederate service was fulfilled by a substitute, B. E. Ferguson. Later the 21st Battalion became part of the 7th Georgia Cavalry who marched north to Virginia.
William died at about age 75 about 1909 in Bulloch County. He is buried at Old Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, near Ivanhoe (Briar Patch), Bulloch County. His grave stone was added decades after his death. His ancestry was Scots-Irish. I hope one of his descendants will add his photo to this site.
