Mary and John were married in Taylor County May 14, 1857.

Mary began drawing a widow's pension for John's Confederate service in 1901. For 1919 she received $90. Before her death she became blind and asked for an increase due to blindness.

The 1870 Federal Census Taylor County GA shows John Bateman age 36, Mary age 34 and their son Theophalus age 11.

The 1880 Federal Census Taylor County GA shows John Bateman age 46, Mary Bateman age 40 and their sons, Theophalus age 21 and John age 6.

The 1900 Federal Census Taylor County GA shows Mary Bateman widow born December 1833 bore 1 child 1 child living, with her son J.H. Bateman born October 1857.

The 1910 Federal Census Taylor County GA shows Mary J.R. Bateman age 79 bore 2 children 2 living with son Orphie Bateman age 51. In the same residence but listed as a separate household: John Bateman age 36, his wife Jenzie age 28, W. Bryant 10, Eula M. 8, Katie Alma 5, Nora 2 and mother-in-law Matilda Grimes age 59.

The 1920 Federal Census Taylor County GA shows Mary Bateman age 86 as a boarder in the household of James and Annie Wallace. (John seems to have moved to Griffin to work in the cotton mill. It looks as if his wife Jency died in Taylor County in 1911. No sign of Theophalus.)
