His father perished in the flu pandemic of 1918. The mother's failed health caused her to be unable to properly take care of 4 children. They were all placed in the Masonic Home and School, Ft. Worth, TX, where Abner graduated as valedictorian of his high school class. He served as an FBI agent for 3 years during WW II.

Former Dean of Law School, later president of Baylor University. He is only the second person to have served as President, Chancellor, and President Emeritus. Founder of ICUT (Independent Colleges and Universities of Texas) He also served as President of the Baptist General Convention of Texas.

Coroneted a 33rd Degree Scottish Rite Mason in 1969, later honored with the Grand Cross in 1991 (highest honor the Scottish Rite can bestow).
