Claude Solomon Maynard (1897-1963), firstborn son of Chauncy Claud Maynard and his wife, Ada (Fate) Maynard, was born with an intellectual disability. Claude was a beloved and valued member of his family and community. He resided with his father & mother until they were elderly and were no longer able to take care of their adult disabled son.

1935 Residence of Chauncey & Ida Maynard, and their son, Claude, age 38.
Location: Westfield, Plymouth County, Iowa. SOURCE: The 1940 U.S. Census states that in 1935, the family of Chauncy & Ida Maynard resided in the "same house" as in 1940. Their disabled son, Claude, would have also been living with his parents in 1935.
1940 UNITED STATES FEDERAL CENSUS.
Westfield, Plymouth County, Iowa. (Chancey C. Maynard, age 68. Residence in 1935: "Same House." WIFE: Ada H. [Fate] Maynard, age 64. Residence in 1935: "Same House."
NOTE: In 1940, their disabled son, Claude S. Maynard, age 42, is listed on the 1940 Census as a resident of the state institution, in Cherokee, Iowa. Therefore, Claude was probably institutionalized sometime between 1935 and 1940).
1940 UNITED STATES FEDERAL CENSUS.
Cherokee, Cherokee, Iowa, United States. (On the 1940 Census, "Claude S. Maynard, age 42, born S.D.," is listed as a patient at the state institution, in Cherokee, Iowa. He was *not* listed as a resident of the institution in 1935; thus, Claude would have still been living with his parents in 1935.
SOMETIME BETWEEN 1935-1940, Claude was admitted to the Iowa institution for people with cognitive and other disabilities. During that era, no community-based programs existed & state institutions (as deplorable as they were), were typically the only choice when family members were no longer able to provide around-the-clock care for a disabled family member.
Old records indicate that more than 800 patients were buried over the years, in the institution cemetery, in Cherokee, Iowa. However, to date, of those 800+ burials, only a dozen people are currently listed on the Find-A-Grave site as being buried in the institution cemetery, a.k.a., "Beacon Hollow Cemetery," in Cherokee, IA.
The date and place of the death of Claude Solomon Maynard is (as yet), unproven. UNANSWERED QUESTION: Is Claude Maynard amongst the many, many institution patients, who were buried in a grave far away from his parental home, with only an anonymous 'number' to mark his final resting place? What a sorrow this would have been for his family, who had lovingly cared for their disabled son for so many decades, in their own community).
