Mary was born in Kimball, Virginia, to George Cletus Mayes and Emma Foster Mayes on February 16, 1917. She spent most of her childhood in the Luray, Virginia area.
Mary was the youngest of seven children and was preceded in death by her three sisters, Mildred Mayes Foltz, Ruth Mayes Sours and Thelma Mayes McCuin, and by her three brothers, William "Bill" Mayes, Laban Mayes and Ivan Mayes.
Mary's first husband, Roy S. Dagenhart, and his three grown sons also preceded her in death.
In 1956, Mary and Paul Revere Smith were married, and she became a loving stepmother to his children, Paula Smith (VanDomelen) and Bruce M. Smith. She is survived by these children, five grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.
For many years Mary worked at Sealtest Dairy in Washington, D.C. After her retirement, she spent much of her time working in her large and beautiful yard, and at her sewing machine making quilts, lap robes and hygiene bags for nursing homes. She also created special ties for Paul, relatives and friends. Mary was a member of the Arlington Church of the Brethren, were she was a member of the choir for many years.
A funeral service is planned for Saturday, May 7, at the Pavilion at Beahm's Chapel, 211 Lee Hwy., Luray, Va. 22835 at 2 p.m.
