Per his Indiana Certificate of Death, he was born September 10, 1869 and died May 11, 1939.
He was named after his paternal uncle, James A. Matson.

He was the son of Lewis I. Matson and Orcelia Clark Matson.
On February 28, 1893 as James Matson, he married Pearl Playford at Hillsdale, Michigan.
They were the parents of three children.

James Lewis Matson, son of Lewis I. and Orcelia R. Matson was born September 10, 1869, near Pleasant Lake and died May 8th, 1939, at the home of his son, Oscar. He was united in marriage to Pearl Playford who died May 22nd, 1920. To them were born three children, Lucile and Oscar of Pleasant Lake and Margaret, who died April 4th, 1899. Mr. Matson attended public school in Pleasant Lake, graduating high school in 1888. Also attended Cornell College of Mount Vernon, Iowa and Tri-State College of Angola. When a young man he became a member of the Masonic fraternity, having served as master many terms.

He was appointed rural mail carrier and later postmaster at Pleasant Lake, serving nearly fifteen years in postal service. He was also engaged at different times in farming, gravel business and as a salesman. Mr. Matson possessed a friend disposition, was devoted to his family and a great lover of children; taking no end of pleasure with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Surviving are two children, eleven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, a sister Mable O. Brown, of Chicago, Illinois, a brother, John O. Matson, of Pleasant Lake and many relatives and friends. Funeral services at Baptist church, May 11th, burial in Clark Cemetery, Rev. W.E. Maners officiating.

James Matson Dies at Pleasant Lake
James Lewis Matson, aged 69, passed away Monday night at his home in Pleasant Lake. Mr. Matson, who was widely known in this vicinity, was a retired farmer. The body will lie in state at the Baptist church in Pleasant Lake from 12 until 2:00, Thursday, when the funeral services will be held. Burial will be in the Pleasant Lake Cemetery. Mr. Matson is survived by a son, Oscar L. Matson and a daughter, Mrs. Lucille Griffith, one brother, John L. Matson, all of Pleasant Lake, a sister, Mrs. Mable H. Brown, of Chicago and eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
