Donald Grant Mathena, 87, Emporia, passed away Sunday morning, August 14, 2016 at the Coffey County Hospital. Burlington, Kansas
Don was born March 3, 1929 at Hartford, Kansas, the son of Frank and Edith (Reeves) Mathena. He married Marian Turpin September 20, 1951. She died in May of 1992. He later married Betty Bargo May 5, 2005, and she passed away later.
Don and Marian were blessed with four children. Two of whom survive: daughter, Wanda White, Hamilton, Kansas, and son, Donn Mathena, Hartford, Kansas. Don and Marian’s daughter, Sherry, and son, Dean Alan, died earlier. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, twenty-seven great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, as well as several nephews and nieces, and great-nephews and nieces.
Also preceding in death were his twin sister, Doris, as well as four sisters, and a brother.
Don grew up on a farm in the Hartford area, attending school there until he was 16, when he left school to help take care of his family. He worked for Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Company, Lyon County Road and Bridge Department and Sauder Tank Company in Emporia prior to his retirement.
Don loved to fish, hunt, ride horses, and play cards and bingo.
Funeral services will be Saturday, August 20, 2016 at 1:30 P.M. at the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia. The service will be conducted by Rev. Dr. Leonard Wagner and Pastor Jeremy Kitchingham. Interment will be in the Fowler Cemetery, east of Emporia.
The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7:00 P.M. until 8:30 P.M. at the funeral home.
A memorial has been established for the Emporia Animal Shelter with contributions sent in care of the funeral home, PO Box #175, Emporia, Kansas 66801.
