He was born July 18, 1948 in Haywood County and was the son of James M. and Geraldine Massie of Candler.
He served more than one tour of duty in the U.S. Army in Vietnam and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and South Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. A true soldier Doug was and faced many trials attributed to the war. All of these he overcame. One Sgt. recalled "a good man to have your back".
A life long horse lover, he raised and trained award winning Paint Quarter Horses. Doug started showing horses in the 70's along with all his "horse" friends, all who admired and loved Doug. Doug was a true friend and was always there to help when anyone was in need. Doug will be missed but
never forgotten.
He was employed at Blue Ridge Paper Products, Inc.
