On July 17, 1870, he was assigned to Company F, 7th US Cavalry at Ft Hays KS. His daily duties were listed as orderly to department headquarters & mail carrier.

He was promoted to sergeant during his first enlistment. In July of 1874, Mason was demoted to private for gross misconduct.

When his enlistment expired on October 29, 1875, he re-enlisted & was asssigned to Company E, 7th US Cavalry. On November 1, 1875, he was promoted to corporal.

During the Little Bighorn Campaign, Mason was in charge of the headquarters fatigue detail.

At the Battle of the Littlle Bighorn, Mason (and Company E) were assigned to Maj Reno's battalion.

Mason was killed during the battle. It has been reported he was either killed during the Valley Fight or on Reno's Bluffs. His body was never identified.

Mason and other soldiers killed during the battle were buried where they were found. In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on top of Last Stand Hill.
