Zachary Martinez of Phoenix passed away Dec. 26, 2004, at the age of 17. He was born Oct. 11, 1987, to Frank and Monica Martinez in Safford.

Zack lived most of his life in the Gila Valley. He attended school in Solomon, Safford and Thatcher schools. He played football and baseball in the Thatcher leagues until the 7th grade, when he and his family moved to Phoenix.

He had his life all planned out. When he graduated, he was going to attend culinary school to become a chef. He wanted to travel the world as a chef. He planned to retire (quite wealthy) at the age of 40 and move back to Safford and spend his time fishing.

On Jan. 2, 2004, Zack was diagnosed with leukemia. He was fighting. Leukemia didn't take him; an unfortunate accident did. He touched many lives this past year, and all will miss him greatly.

He is survived by his parents, Frank and Monica Martinez of Phoenix; his siblings, Nicholas, Francisco Jr., Gabriel Jr., and Francisca "Frankie;" his grandparents, Felipa Martinez and Jessie Dominguez; and many aunts and uncles.

A rosary was recited Thursday, Dec. 30, in the Morris Safford Funeral Home chapel. Mass was held Dec. 31 at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Safford. Interment took place at the San Jose Cemetery in San Jose.

Arrangements were en-trusted to Morris Safford Funeral Home.
