"John W. Martin, Jr.
(Special to the Picayune.)
Brookhaven, Miss., Dec. 29 - Mr. John W. Martin, Jr. of this city, died last night after an illness of four weeks. He was buried in Rose Hill cemetery this evening. A large concourse of people followed his remains to the cemetery. Mr. Martin was 65 years of age, coming to this country many years before the war. His family first settled in Copiah county and afterwards moved to this country. He was one of the oldest citizens of this city, coming here when it was no more than a clearing in the pine forest. He served four years in the war, and has been identified with the best element of society and the development of this county and city since he first came here. His friends were legion among the people who knew him, and sorrow at his death is universal. He was a brother of Dr. J. M. Martin, of this place, and leaves a wife, two sons and three daughters surviving him."
