Mary was the daughter of Tom and Addie Marlar, the third of eight children. In 1897 she wed Robert J. "Bob" Creech, the son of a farmer, who worked at the local lumber mill in Chidester, Arkansas. They had eleven children, Euphy, Luther, Charles, Buel, Paul, Ellis, Myrtice, Leo, Louis, Van Buren, and Horace. Tragically, she and Bob lost two of them, Charlie dying of pneumonia at the age of 11, and Leo drowning while swimming in the Ouachita River at age 15. A homemaker, Mary lived her adult life at Chidester and then the country house on the Creech homestead in nearby Reader, until the infirmities of age demanded she move in with her daughter Myrtice in Morrilton, where she passed away at the age of 86.

Mary was my great-grandmother, and I remember her as a sweet little lady who let me bang away on her piano despite my lack of talent, who baked great pies and other goodies, and who had a lovely porch for a little kid to play on, complete with porch swing and sweet-smelling rose vines. Mary herself had not a little talent on that piano. During her final months she was debilitated by a stroke, but her mind and eye were clear enough to recognize everybody and converse with them - and her eye would light up and that one corner of her mouth curl into her old, sweet smile.

Meemaw, you are so missed, but we know that you are now singing above with the angels.

Many, many thanks to Jeanette for her work on Mary's memorial!
