John Arthur Maphet was 1rst child born to John Robert and Alice Munger Maphet, in Black Jack, Douglas, Kansas. He married Maggie Missouri Lane Maphet, 21 Sep 1892, in Newton, Harvey, Kansas. Maggie Missouri was taken in as a baby by his grandparents, Charles T. and Maria Louisa Hopkins Maphet. She was born 15 May 1869 near Little Rock, Ark. Her mother died after her birth and her father died prior to the birth being in some type of skirmish while they were traveling. John Arthur and Maggie had 11 children. After the birth of their first child Leonard Arthur, 4 July 1893, J.A. left them in Kansas and made the 1893 Cherokee Strip Run. He settled on the homestead (Sod House) on the south side of now U.S. 60 between Meno and Lahoma. He helped build the Pleasant Valley Country school where he served on the school board. this is where his children and oldest son Leonard's wife's siblings (Deckers) attended. He was one of the builders of the First Christian Church that was built giving of his time and money in Meno. Before that he and his family attended Pleasant Valley Christian Church. In the Pleasant Valley community he was among the group that helped start the Pleasant Hill Cemetery just across and up the road from his homestead. Their children were, Leonard A. 1893;, Ernest, 1895/1895 (lived only 6 mo.); Charles Allen, 1896; Leola Vere, 1898; Ethel Louise, 1900; John Robert 1902/11 Dec 1925, killed in oilfield accident; Cecil T., 1904; Earl Marvin, 1907; Ruby Mae, 1909; Clara Alice, 1911 and Baby Gladys Helen, 13 June 1913/16 Jul 1913 (lived one month). John Arthur was a 32nd degree Mason and a life member of the Friendship Lodge in Enid. His father and his grandfather were also Mason's. His oldest son Leonard A. became the Grand Commander of the State of Oklahoma between 1948-1949. John Arthur was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, uncle, friend and community supporter. A true pioneer spirit. He died on the Homestead, a place he thought of as home. He was 73 years, 11 months and 23 days when he passed.
